John Woolman’s Diary: Learning to Name a Conflict
Period: early life
Retrospective accounts of childhood, work and conscience explain why the narrator begins to write.
Literary reading guide
The beginning is often retrospective rather than dated day by day. Childhood, labor, conscience and spiritual education appear as remembered episodes that explain the kind of attention the later narrator values. This is a different form from a daily log; treating every paragraph as an entry written on the day described would misrepresent the work.
For modern journaling, distinguish a dated observation from a memory recorded afterward. Both can be valuable. Simply mark which is which. When you tell the story of an earlier decision, describe what you know now without pretending that your earlier self already possessed that understanding.
