Samuel Pepys

Samuel Pepys’s Diary: Career, Household, and City Life

Period: 1661–1664

The diary becomes a dense record of routine: appointments, books, entertainments, disputes, purchases and a growing administrative workload.

Literary reading guide

Appointments, accounts, entertainment and domestic matters appear alongside changes in public responsibility. Repeated routines make the diary more than a parade of famous encounters; they reveal what the writer notices when nothing publicly dramatic is occurring. Attention to money, pleasure and professional standing can be read together rather than forced into separate categories.

Consider how a journal acquires meaning through accumulation. A single lunch or purchase may tell little; a year of them begins to disclose preferences, obligations and habits. When writing your own diary, note ordinary commitments as well as the exceptional experience. Future patterns become visible only if the ordinary days are allowed to remain.
